Chapter 9: Acts of Disappearing.
"Then the sweet loving you give to me ... I'm addicted to your sweetness, I'm trying to be good because I'm supposed to be waiting until marriage, but you make it hard for me Lissa. I would go crazy if another man had that; your sweetness. I don't think I would take it well if for some reason we broke up."
Shane wrapped his arms around his woman. She felt warm and soft. He kissed the back of her neck. They were laying in bed. He moved his left hand down to gently rub her belly. He lifted his head and smelt her hair. Intoxicating. Lissa stirred and opened her eyes. She smiled.
She scooched her butt back on him. Shane chuckled, bent his head and playfully kissed her neck. He pressed himself on her. Lissa reached her hand up and rubbed his head.
"Good morning handsome," Lissa said with a happy sigh. She yawned quietly.
"Good morning sweet baby," Shane said softly. He continued to rub her belly. Gently, he kissed her shoulder.
"Shane," Lissa said with a sigh.
"Hmm?" Shane responded.
"Mmh, I love the way you touch and kiss my body," she said. Her tone was sexy. Shane loved hearing her voice like that.
"I love touching you," he said seductively. "And kissing your body is my pleasure, every beautiful part of you." He used his arms to turn her to face him. He touched her face and kissed her lips with soft pecks.
He was wearing a blue cotton t-shirt. Lissa rested her hand on his chest. She ran her fingers across it, admiring its large size. Shane pulled her closer. Lissa closed her eyes as he positioned her head on his chest.
She listened to his breathing and felt his heartbeat. She loved him so much. Lissa opened her eyes and stared at him. Biting her bottom lip, she smiled at him. She felt like being a little naughty.
Turning around so her back was facing him again, she wiggled her bottom, teasing him. Shane eased back then thrusted on her. Lissa gasped then moaned softly. She could feel his arousal. He felt hard and strong. If he could be inside her right now, she would be very happy. She responded by pushing her butt on him. He reciprocated by pressing his member on her.
Lissa bit her bottom lip, undulated her hips and moaned softly. Shane grunted, "mmh." He cupped her buttocks and squeezed. She wore black tights and a white blouse. He couldn't help but admire her curves. He humped on her and felt her move in time with him. She was a beautiful temptress.
He groaned her name and heard her moan. He wished he could be one with her again. That was how making love to her felt. It was like he was connected to her, he was one half and she was the other, and when he was inside her they were complete.
Now, each encounter felt deep and poignant. The last time they made love it brought her to tears. Happy tears. Afterwards, when they lay together, he held her and asked what she was feeling while they were making love. She told him his touch, his kisses; the things he said to her, everything he did, felt like a beautiful song being played and she was the instrument.
He understood what she was feeling. The raw emotions between them were authentic and beautiful. He was vulnerable with her more than any other woman. It scared him a little. But yet, he was drawn to her. He couldn't get enough of her. He was never in love like this.
"Yo te amo mi amor," Lissa said airily, closing her eyes. She wanted him. She couldn't deny how he made her feel. She moaned his name. "Shane, yo te amo ... mmhh, ahh! Yo te quiero!" she said.
Shane groaned. "I love you too my sweet baby and I really want you too," he replied. He wanted her but would control himself. "We can't," he spoke to her tenderly. Lissa sighed then nodded. "Okay," she said reluctantly. Moving his hands away from her soft derriere, he adjusted himself in his pajama pants so she couldn't feel his arousal. He shifted his lower body slightly away from her.
"Hungry?" he asked. Tucking his right arm under her body, he circled his arms around her shoulders. He kissed her head. Lissa closed her eyes and smiled. He felt like home.
"Yeah," she told him.
"Okay, I'll get us something. There used to be a cook shop nearby that does breakfast. Would you try their cooking, if they're still operating?"
Lissa stretched happily. "Yeah. Okay," she answered. She turned around to face him. He's so sexy and handsome, Lissa mused.
She inhaled his masculine scent. He still smelt of soap but there was a hint of his own body odour. She loved it. She burrowed her head into his shirt. Shane did a little laugh and squeezed her closer.
They lay together for another half hour before he got up and went to shower. He got dressed in blue jeans, a white t-shirt and dark blue crocs. He tenderly kissed her eager lips then went to buy breakfast.
Lissa sat up after he left. She scooted over to the side of the bed and retrieved her phone from an old, antique night stand. There was a text from her mother. She decided to call her. After four rings Sandra answered her phone.
"Lissa honey, are you okay?" She heard her mother ask.
Lissa felt a pang of guilt. She wished things were different, but she wanted to be with Shane.
"Yes mommy, I am okay. I'm in Westmoreland. We're okay," she told her.
"Westmoreland?" There was a pause then, "That's good honey, but my only concern is you. Baby, it's not too late to come home," Sandra said.
"Mommy, it's not safe. It's not safe for you guys to be around me. If Devon knows I'm his woman other people might know too," Lissa replied.
"Who is Devon? Sandra asked.
"Devon is the name of the guy this evil man called Mr Z contracted to kill Shane. He was instructed to kill someone close to him, to make him suffer, then kill him afterwards. He decided to save Shane's life instead," Lisa revealed.
"Oh my god! Lissa!" Sandra's heart was gripped with fear.
"Mommy, I am fine," Lissa tried to reassure her.
Lissa, you're way over your head," Sandra's voice was trembling. "Honey, it's not safe to be near Shane right now. If he loved you he would allow you to come home or at least we can send you somewhere else where you'll be safe."
Lissa heard shuffling on the line. Her father came on the phone. "Lissa baby, good morning," he greeted her. She could tell he was glad to hear from her but he sounded sad.
"Morning daddy," she answered him.
"Lissa honey, how are you?" he asked.
"I'm okay daddy," she said.
Marcus cleared his throat."Baby, you know your mother and I love you. In future I ask that you call me, okay? Contact me anytime you want, but don't contact your mom at this time," he told her.
"I know you and your mom have a strong bond, and that is why I am asking you to call me instead. She's not taking the decision you made to be with your police friend very well. She didn't really sleep last night," he said, his voice grave.
Lissa heard quiet sobs in the background. She felt really remorseful. "Lissa, you're an adult and you are free to make decisions for yourself, but not at the expense of my wife. She is your mom but she's also my wife. I am your dad, but also your mom's husband. Do you understand? My priority right now is to help her get through this new situation."
Lissa felt really guilty now. She cleared her throat. "Yeah ... yeah daddy, I understand. I'm sorry about everything. Really sorry." She felt terrible that the situation was taking a toll on her mom.
"I know you are baby," he said. "Maybe it's our fault. We held you too close and never really allowed you to fail, make mistakes and learn from them when you were younger. We always tried to protect you." He sighed. "You've made your decision honey. Time to live by it. But if you need anything contact me, okay?"
Lissa nodded, though her dad couldn't see her. "Understood," she said. Her lips were trembling, tears stung the back of her eyes.
"Bye daddy," she said.
"Bye honey."
"Talk to you ..." Lissa paused. She heard the 'click' of a disconnected line. Her dad hung up on her. Lissa was stunned. He had never done that to her before. She turned her face to the wall and cried.

Jason was driving Carli to work. After they got home last night, he affectionately kissed and caressed his wife, making sure that his lovemaking was slow and tender. He realized that she was worried about her cousin and wanted to soothe her mind. When they both lay in bed satisfied, he held her close and told her he loved her.
He glanced over at Carli while he drove and observed that her countenance was sad. She was so beautiful. He hated to see her upset. He briefly squeezed the hand nearest to him. She looked at him and smiled. He smiled at her. "You okay baby?" he asked.
Carli sighed. "Yeah, I am. Just thinking about Lissa. Hoping she's okay," she said. Jason brought her hand up to his lips and gently nipped the skin with his teeth. Her smile widened as she looked at him.
"How did I get so lucky?" she mused. "Jason you're handsome and sexy, loving and kind. I love you. And when you touch me it's like I'm in another place, some place safe and beautiful. Thank you."
Jason felt good to hear her words. He would always love her and treat her with care. "You're my dream come true Carli. I don't want to mess this up. I love you. I'll do anything to make you happy," he told her. She leaned over and kissed his cheek. He grinned at her then focused his gaze on the road.

Shane brought home ackee and saltfish for himself and decided he would buy steamed cabbage with saltfish for her. He ordered boiled ground provisions for both of them: boiled green bananas, yams and sweet potatoes.
She hadn't said she was having morning sickness but he wanted to be cautious. He knocked on the door and after a few seconds she opened it for him. He stepped inside and locked the door behind him.
She walked into the kitchen and he followed her. He put the bag with the food boxes on the counter and pulled her into his arms. He kissed her forehead. She leaned into him and closed her eyes.
As he held her, something felt off about her. He stroked her hair. "Everything okay?" he asked. She was still wearing the clothes she slept in. She would normally be showered and in fresh clothes by now. He didn't mind though, she was very sexy in the tights she was wearing. But he felt like something was wrong.
He waited for her to answer him. Lissa sighed. She moved away from him and sat at the dining table. "My mom is taking me being with you really hard." She saw the consternation on Shane's face. "No, not that she dislikes you. It's the fact that you're in danger and she's worried that some of that trouble will spill over on me since I'm with you." She looked at his face and saw his hurt. "I'm really sorry," he said. He came and sat before her. He rubbed her thighs. "Tell me what happened," he said.
"Well, she sent me a text asking if I was okay, so I called her back and told her I'm okay and that we're in Westmoreland," she told him. "Mommy said if you cared about me you would have allowed me to stay with them, or they could have sent me somewhere safe. I told her being around them would jeopardize their safety." Lissa sighed heavily. "Then my dad came on the phone and told me that mom hasn't been sleeping well since I left and that in future I should call him if I need anything and not mommy because she's not taking the situation well."
Shane moved his chair closer. He touched her face. "Lissa, baby, I'm really sorry about everything. If I could do it all over again, I would never had gone on the rampage those years ago, when I was trying to solve my friend's murder. I would have been more careful. I love you. When this is over I promise I will make it up to you and your family." He squeezed her hand. "I promise," he told her.
She nodded. He reached over and hugged her. She hugged him back, feeling a little better but still solemn. He stood up and reached for the bag with their breakfast. He rested it on the dining table, untied it and took out the boxes.
"I bought cabbage and saltfish for you. I hope that is okay. I know you love ackee and saltfish, but because you're pregnant, I don't know if it will make you feel nauseous." He handed her the disposable box while smiling. She opened it and looked inside. The food looked delish! She looked over at his breakfast and smiled. "Could I taste a little of your ackee, please?" she asked.
He smiled at her. "Sure," he said handing her the box. She ate a little. It was peppery but very tasty. She ate three forks full of it then gave it back to him. "Tastes good?" he asked her.
She nodded. "Too peppery for me but nice. It tastes good," she answered. She took up her plastic fork and dug into her food. "It's delicious but there's no pepper," she told him. Shane nodded. "Good. I asked them to cook it especially for you," he said.
Her eyebrows shot up in surprise. "You asked ... you asked them to do a special pot for me?"
Shane saw her expression and laughed softly. "Yes, I did. The person who owns the cook shop is an old friend of mine. I also explained that you're pregnant. I had to pay extra though, but I don't mind." He chuckled when he saw the surprised look on her face. "Lissa, it's fine. I want you to be comfortable. It was my friend's mom's business but she's taken it over. It's more like a small restaurant now. Her mom is retired."
"And you didn't put her out of her way? Is she an ex-girlfriend or something?" Lissa felt uncomfortable.
Shane laughed. "Why would you think that?" He was amused. She looked at him, her gaze sobered up. Shane saw her expression and smiled. He winked at her. He loved the fact that she was jealous over him. "No baby, she's not my ex. She's my brother's ex actually," he revealed. He rubbed the thigh of her right leg. He saw her relax.
"So is she still carrying a torch for him? Suppose she thinks you're him? Or maybe she wants you?" she asked.
He squeezed her thigh and blew her a kiss. "Honey, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. She knows it's me. Matter of fact, she called my name to me before I reminded her. As for carrying a torch for Shaun, I don't know. I do know my brother is very happily married.
"As for wanting me, she'd be wasting her time. I only have eyes for you." He leaned forward and kissed her cheek. "Don't worry baby, I'm here. I'm yours," he said, his eyes showing his affection. "Now eat something and take your supplements, okay?"
Lissa nodded smiling. She felt relieved. "Okay," she said digging into her food. Shane watched her for half a minute then started eating. She was adorable. He smiled. Jealousy looked cute on her.
Later that morning, around 9 o'clock, Shane got dressed in his uniform. He reminded her that his dad was coming by, and he would give her number to him, so he could call her to confirm if he was still coming down there or not. She nodded her agreement.
He kissed her brow then gently squeezed her arm before capturing her lips in a passionate kiss. He took his service revolver and private firearm with him, but left the shotgun behind, locking it away in the bedroom closet.
He arrived in Kingston at 12:38 in the afternoon and was able to get to the Constant Spring branch around 12:49 p m. He walked into the administrative area of the station and asked to speak with Senior Superintendent Chambers.
He identified himself by giving his name, rank, ID card and badge number. He also revealed his branch and who was his commanding officer. He was told to have a seat and wait until acknowledged.
While he waited he sent a text to Superintendent Dacres informing him that he was at the Constant Spring Police Station waiting to be seen. Superintendent Dacres replied by texting, "Okay."
Shane looked around the room. There were five other officers present besides himself. He nodded at one of them who returned the gesture, and went back to writing his report.
Shane texted Lissa sending heart eyes and kiss emojis. He told her he missed her, that he couldn't wait to get back to her as soon as possible, and that he loved her. She replied with a red heart and heart eyes. She told him she loved him, and that being away from him felt like torture. He called her.
Lissa answered, "Hey baby."
"Hey beautiful," Shane replied.
There was a brief pause then, "I miss you," she said. "I've never felt like this for anyone else." Shane felt the same way. There was a yearning for her presence he couldn't quite fathom. He sighed. "I promise I'll come home as soon as I can, okay?" he said. He licked his lips then bit the bottom one. Her voice was doing things to him. He cleared his throat and tried not to think sexy thoughts.
"Mhmm," she answered him in a soft, playful tone.
Shane chuckled. "I miss you baby, trust me," he said, trying to keep his voice low and monotone, so he didn't draw the attention of prying ears. "I wish I could hold you right now. I'm sorry I couldn't give you what you wanted. I wanted it too but, you know ..." He sighed quietly. He scanned the room. The other five men had their heads down focusing on whatever it was they were doing.
Lissa sighed also. "I know. I love your touch. I love the way you make love to me. I know we've done stuff already, but I understand your restrictions, and I'm willing to wait on you." She paused then said, "Also, thank you for breakfast and what you did. That was very considerate of you," she told him.
Shane felt the ache in his chest ease a little. He leaned back in the chair he was sitting on. "Lissa, the way you make me feel is surreal. I'll do anything to please you, short of murder," he said chuckling.
Lissa laughed softly. "Why would I ask you to do that?" she asked amused.
"Sometimes the way I feel around you I think I could," he answered her. He closed his eyes and leaned his head back on the wall.
"What do you mean?" she asked. She bit her bottom lip and sighed.
Shane heard her sensual tone. He could tell she was aroused. He wished he could touch her and experience the mysterious hold she had on him again. He had to refocus, he didn't want to embarrass himself. He cleared his throat.
Shane's voice dipped even lower, just above a whisper. "Meaning when I think of anyone hurting you, it makes me angry and I think if it came down to it, I would do anything to protect you, anything. Lissa, you don't understand the way I feel about you. I know I've never felt anything like this before. I'm willing to die for you if I have to.
"Then the sweet loving you give to me," he continued with a sigh. "I'm addicted to your sweetness," he whispered, not wanting anyone to hear him. "I'm trying to be good because I'm supposed to be waiting until marriage, but you make it hard for me Lissa. I would go crazy if another man had that; your sweetness. I don't think I would take it well if for some reason we broke up," he told her with a sigh.
"Why would we break up?" Lissa asked surprised. She bit her bottom lip. She wanted him to touch her. He was whispering but she could hear the sexy, deep rasp of his voice, and knew he was hot for her. She wished he was already her husband. She would show him how much his words meant to her.
She was laying on the couch. She was about to go shower when he called. She needed to check then remove the pad she was wearing. But right now she was captivated by the disclosure of how he felt about her. He was being very transparent with her. She decided she would tell him what was happening with her.
"The life of a police officer's wife isn't easy. We risk our lives daily. The hope is we'll come home safely and in one piece but there's always the possibility we'll get hurt. Some wives can't handle it. Some wives divorce, others just separate. I don't want that for us," he replied.
"Shane, I love you, and not just because you make me crazy when we make love.," she giggled softly. "You're sweet. You're very kind to me and considerate. And the faith you have in God, baby I respect it. I respect you. As I said, I'm willing to wait for you. It'll be hard for me but I want to.
"As for the life of a JCF officer and the risks, I'm not on the front line, but I've counselled several of your colleagues. I think I understand the risks, and I still want you. I'm with you in this thing remember? I'm here with you, not my family. I love you."
Shane opened his eyes and stared at the floor. He smiled. He knew she was sincere. He could feel it. "I love you baby," he said.
"I love you," she said. "Baby, I need to tell you something."
"Okay," Shane said.
"It's about the baby," she said. She felt nervous. Will he be angry when he finds out I'm just telling him about the bleeding?
Just then, the secretary answered the phone and called his name. Shane looked up at her. Lissa was saying something about the baby, he was concerned, but he had to hang up. "Baby, I have to go now. I'm sorry. I'll call you back as soon as I can, okay?"
Lissa replied with, "Okay."
Shane ended the call.
Lissa got up and went to the bathroom.

Sergeant Crosby knocked on Senior Superintendent Chambers' office door and waited. He heard, "Come in", and opened the door and closed it behind him. He saluted his superior: his shoulders square, back straight, and his head facing forward.
Senior Supe Chambers nodded and smiled. "At ease. Please have a seat, Sergeant," he said.
Shane pulled out the only other chair in the room, sat on it, and waited. He looked around the room. There was a picture of Senior Supe's children: three boys, and his wife. There was also a picture of an older woman, Shane assumed was his superior's mother. The photos faced each other and were slightly slanted.
Senior Supe Chambers was typing something on his desktop. He looked up briefly, then continued, "Give me a minute Sergeant Crosby, let me get this out of the way I have four more lines to type. Be with you in a few."
Sergeant Crosby nodded. "Okay sir," he answered.
After five minutes had passed. Senior Superintendent Chambers looked up and smiled at him. "Okay Sergeant, how can I assist you?"
Shane smiled politely. He was surprised that the Senior Superintendent was being so cordial. Their last encounter was anything but polite.
"A few days ago, last Sunday to be exact, there was a shooting ..."
"Oh yes, yes, the shooting," Senior Supe interrupted. "Near Constant Spring Terrace?"
Shane nodded.
"Okay, we had to move the young man in question." Senior Supe said.
"Move?" Shane asked perplexed. "Why?"
"A matter of national security," Senior Supe replied.
Shane felt uncomfortable. "Explain?" he asked.
"We received an anonymous tip that the police station would be broken into and that we needed to move the young man to a more secure facility."
"Was that all the tipster said?" Shane's brow was knotted.
"No, he said the lives of our men and women would be in danger, since someone called Mr Z would attempt to break in to retrieve his employee."
"I see," Sergeant Crosby responded. "When did you receive this tip?" he asked.
"Yesterday evening around 6 o'clock. We then moved swiftly to remove the prisoner and have him placed somewhere else."
"I see. I actually came to retrieve him. On Sunday evening there was an attack on my life. The attack took place on my girlfriend's road, but as you can see I was unharmed. That young man, Devon, is the reason I am still alive. It was two against one, he evened the odds by shooting at the men. He saved my life. He has information on his boss that I need from him. He works for a man called Mr Z."
Senior Supe nodded his understanding. "Well, I'm glad you are safe. Thanks be to God. Are you taking the requisite precautions?" he asked.
Sergeant Crosby nodded. "Thank you sir. Yes sir, I am," he said. "Would it be possible to have the prisoner released into my custody? I would like to transfer him out of the Kingston and St. Andrew region. I think a rural location is best for his safety."
"Where?' Senior Supe asked.
"I have Santa Cruz, St. Bess in mind or maybe even Hanover," he told him.
Senior Supe shook his head smiling. "I understand that you have skin in the game, but that is too far. High Command is very much interested in this one and wants him nearby."
What is going on here? Shane wondered. "You're saying High Command is interested in Devon?" Shane asked shocked by this revelation. "Is it because of the illusive Mr Z?"
Senior Supe nodded. "Yes, we've heard rumblings about this guy. Still not sure who he is, but like you said, the young man who helped you may be the key to finding out who he is. The young man, Devon, is also suspected to be involved in a number of shootings and murders across the parishes of Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine."
"Could you tell me his location? If I can't have him released to my custody then I would at least like to know where he is," Shane requested.
Senior Supe shook his head slowly. "I can't do that my friend. Orders from High Command is to keep the circle as tight as possible. We believe his life is in danger and we need him alive to build a case."
"Sir, you know that based on our training, I am quite capable of keeping his location confidential," Sergeant Crosby said.
"No disrespect Sergeant, but you have exuberant tendencies. Granted, you are good at investigative work, but you go off the handle too quickly," Senior Supe smiled at him.
Ah! Shane thought. I knew it! Senior Supe Chambers wasn't being cordial to him because he had buried the grudge he had against him. He was being nice because he was feeling smug and knew he had the upper hand.
Sergeant Shane Crosby cleared his throat and leaned forward. "Sir, there may be orders that restrict information being passed around willy nilly, but where it concerns an officer involved in an active case, there is no standing order that denies that officer from receiving information pertinent to the case he or she is working on."
"But you are not the officer active on this case, Inspector Simpson is, and he has been instructed to keep a closed fist on this investigation." Senior Supe said with a smirk on his face.
"No disrespect sir, but I am directly involved in this case. I was attacked. They put my fiance and her family in danger. I can give details about the attack and the two men who were killed, and I was the one who detained Devon so that High Command can now build its case," Shane said squaring his shoulders. He was not intimidated.
Senior Supe leaned forward. Resting his elbows on the desk, he said, "Well, I suggest you tell Inspector Simpson what you know. It is an offense for an officer to withhold information."
"I am not withholding information. I've just now found out that Devon was moved," Shane retorted. He shook his head and smiled ruefully. He said, "Sir, I came here in good faith hoping you would have put behind whatever grudge you have against me. I am not the same person I was two years ago."
Senior Supe leaned back in his chair and allowed it to swivel slightly to the right. He stood up and went to stare out his window. With his back turned, he said, "You ruffled quite a few feathers young man. The Deputy Commissioner and Commissioner were most displeased with me, but I have no grudges towards you. I have no ill will against you. If anything, your ruckus opened my eyes to the fact that there were things happening in my division I wasn't aware of. For that I thank you."
He turned and looked at Shane pointedly, "However, I am bound by the directives of my superiors, your superiors also, in case you've forgotten." He came towards him and stood in front of him. "Devon stays where he is and not even hell is going to move him. He stays where he is until the Commissioner says he moves," Senior Supe said sternly, his eyes giving Shane a warning. Shane stood up. Senior Supe stepped back. Shane cleared his throat. "Understood," he said. "May I be dismissed, sir."
Senior Supe Chambers nodded. "You may leave," he said.
Shane nodded. He saluted him, then walked towards the door. Opening the door, Shane looked back at his superior then turned around and stepped outside. He closed the door behind him.
Senior Superintendent Chambers went to the landline phone on his desk and dialed a number. When he heard the call pick up he said, "Yes, he just came and requested to have Mr Sharpe released into his custody. Yes, I let him know that could not happen. Right. I will keep you informed." He hung up the phone and sat in his chair. He leaned back. His eyes glimpsed the photo of his wife and children. He stared directly at it and smiled. "Everything I do is for you guys," he said. He went back to finishing his paperwork.
Something was wrong. He couldn't put his finger on it but Shane felt very uneasy. He felt that his friend's nephew was in grave danger. He mounted his bike and rode over to his house in Portmore to retrieve his car.
He called the coroner who told him that he would meet him at his police station with his team to do the examination there. Shane agreed and hung up. He then called Superintendent Dacres and briefly told him what Senior Superintendent Chambers said. His superior said he would check something and call him back.
He started the engine of the car and heard it sputter a little then cough to life. "Sorry baby girl, but I need you to move for me." He put the car in 'drive' and felt it shudder then move off slowly. He pressed the gas harder and felt it lurch forward and pick up speed. He grimaced and shook his head. He would have to see what his insurance company will say about this.
He remembered that Lissa needed to speak to him. He hoped all was well with her and the baby. But if anything was wrong, wouldn't she tell him right away? He sighed. Maybe it was nerves on her part. She was more emotional now because of what she had gone through the past few weeks and the pregnancy. He would comfort her when he got home. No sex, but he would hold her close, caress her gently and tell her he loved her. He would be home late though, something was off. He needed to find Inspector Simpson and pick his brain.
Shane dialed Sergeant Reynolds' mobile number. As the phone rang, he placed it on the car's phone mount. He heard the line pick up and his friend say, "Hello?"
"Reynolds, it's Shane, Cross-buy," Shane chuckled.
He heard Reynolds laugh. "Whapm man? I heard you're reclining in the country," he said chuckling.
Shane smiled. "Nah, still working," he replied.
"Mi know man," he said. "Constable Walker, let me know what the real deal is. How is Lissa? She said that Supe told her while she was wiping his phone memory."
Shane smiled. So he did ask Sudie to help him. He laughed softly. "She's okay. Trying to be brave," he said.
"So it's true that you guys are together?" Reynolds asked him.
"Yeah, she's my girl," Shane said smiling. "Who told you?"
"Simpson pinch mi and tell mi weh him observe the Sunday. By the way, glad nothing happened to you. No scratches?"
"No, no scratches. No bruises," Shane said. "Thank God. Just a dinged up vehicle." Shane chuckled.
"Yeh man give thanks," Reynolds agreed. "So Lissa is with you?"
"Yeah, she is," Shane responded.
Reynolds cleared his throat. "Mi a hear some things bredda. Be careful."
"Weh yuh hear?" Shane's heart started to pound.
"Mi hear seh High Command have a special interest in this case here and Simpson under pressure to solve it. Mi also hear from one of my own informants that this Mr Z knows about Lissa. Apparently, he's been watching your every move."
Shane felt his heart pound even faster. "Is your informant willing to talk to me? I need all the help I can get."
"He won't talk to you. Tell me the questions you want me to ask him and I will relay the info to you," Reynolds said. "He's not involved with Mr Z directly but he has a family member who works for him in one of his supposedly 'clean establishments'. Him talking to you could mean the loss of his own life or the loss of his family's. Remember, I told you Mr Z has eyes on your every move."
Shane swallowed hard. He wouldn't be scared. Who was he kidding? He was terrified! But for Lissa's sake he needed to be strong. Reynolds was saying something. "Repeat that Mark?" he asked him.
"Mi just get a text mi seh. I'm gonna check it," Sergeant Reynolds said. Shane smiled then said, "Okay, I'll let you go then, but text mi Simpson's phone number. I seem to have lost it." He ended the call.
Shane was a minute away from his branch. He sped up. When he saw the top of Knutsford Boulevard he turned onto it. Slowing the car down, he drove several more meters before turning into the parkway of the station and shutting off the engine. He got out to see Dr Bromfield and two of his assistants: a male and a female, walking towards him.
"Good morning," Dr Bromfield said.
Morning Anthony," Shane answered. He nodded to acknowledge the young man and woman who were with him. The young man told him, "Morning", but the young woman only smiled. They walked passed him and stood before the vehicle.
"Pretty dinged up," Dr Bromfield said. Shane nodded. "Mhm, I'm going to leave it here. You can come back and collect more ballistics here or take it to wherever you wish."
Bromfield nodded. "Thanks. Glad you're okay," he said smiling at him.
Shane nodded. "Thanks Anthony." He slapped him on the arm. "Appreciate it." Shane left the forensic team to do their work and walked towards the entrance of the station. He opened the door and walked in.
A few of his colleagues looked up and smiled at him. He nodded at them and smiled. Constable Campbell patted him on his back. "Glad you're okay," she said. Shane turned around and nodded at her. "Me too," he said ruefully. She patted his shoulder and went through the front door. There were officers coming in and going out of the police station. Each one, when they realized it was him, smiled at him. Shane felt grateful.
Constable Sudanie Walker was at her desk. She stood up. She wanted to hug him but that was not standard procedure while they were on duty. She smiled at him. He smiled back and nodded at her. He could see the emotions brimming over in her eyes. He placed his hand on her shoulder and briefly squeezed it. He nodded reassuringly at her. She sighed then nodded back at him.
"Is she okay?" she asked. Shane nodded. "Yes, she is," he told her. Shane looked towards Superintendent Dacres' office. "Supe here?" he asked.
Constable Walker nodded. "Yeah, he is." Shane looked back at her. He patted her shoulder, then moved towards Supe's door. He knocked on it and waited until he heard the word, "Come." Shane stepped inside. He waited to be acknowledged. Superintendent Dacres nodded at him. Shane saluted. "At ease, Sergeant," Superintendent Dacres said. He gestured towards one of the seats in his office. Shane smiled and sat on one of them.
Dacres leaned on his desk. He cleared his throat. He reached into the mini fridge behind him and retrieved a chilled bottle of water. "Want one?" he asked.
Shane nodded. "Sure," he said.
Supe Dacres smiled. He took out another one and handed it to him. Shane took it and opened it quickly. He took a big gulp and smiled. He sighed. Supe Dacres looked at him amused. "I figured the sun would be taking its toll on you," he said chuckling.
Shane shook his head smiling, "Yeah man, it's blazing hot outside."
Supe Dacres clasped his hands together. Shane heard a message notification on his phone. He figured it was Reynolds sending him Simpson's cellphone number. He would check it later. He waited for his superior to say something.
Dacres cleared his throat, took another sip of the water before closing the bottle and resting it on his desk. Shane placed his bottled water by his feet on the floor. He waited.
"I called Assistant Commish Smith about the matter. I was able to get a two minute call with her," Supe Dacres began. "Apparently your Devon isn't who he seems. And what I'm telling you is with the understanding that Assistant Commish is a good friend of mine, and she told me this in good faith, so you are to tell no one this. I repeat, tell no one. Not even Ms Dixon."
Shane nodded. "I promise," he said sincerely.
Supe Dacres took another sip of his water then closed the bottle. His gaze bore into Sergeant Crosby. "The young man, Devon is working for our side. Meaning he was a criminal who for whatever the reason came forward and spoke to an officer you might be familiar with, Sergeant Jasmine Lewis, and told her he had information about our phantom Mr Z and he would like to help."
Shane was stunned. The pieces were coming together. "How did he get in contact with her?"
"As you know Sergeant Lewis was assigned to Fraud Squad. Later, she requested to be transferred to Community Policing. Her warm personality has won over the residents in the area where she's assigned.
"Apparently, he expressed an interest in coming out of the lifestyle he was living because of something he saw. Something he has yet to disclose to Sergeant Lewis, but he decided he would help.
"According to his phone's call log, she was the last person he called. Her superiors called her in for questioning and she revealed that he was working to get as much dirt on Mr Z as possible. As for your attack she said he didn't tell her about that, only that he had to be off the radar for awhile."
"Where is he now?" Shane asked. He was flabbergasted.
"I don't know. Assistant Commish Dana Smith has been sworn to secrecy. There is the belief that there are members who may be working duplicitously."
Shane leaned forward. He felt deep concern for the young man who he was gaining new respect for.
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"Meaning there may be some among our ranks who may have ties to our mystery villain, and may want to harm Devon," Supe Dacres said, dipping his voice low. Shane sat back shocked. He remembered that a text had come to his phone, probably from Sarge Reynolds.
"Supe, please excuse me. I need to check some media," Shane said.
Supe opened his bottle of water. "Go ahead," he said between sips.
Shane took his phone out of his pocket and unlocked the screen. He saw the notification of a single text on Whatsapp. He opened his messages. He saw the word "NOW!" and his heart leaped. He hurriedly opened the message.
It said:
Shane just got a text from my informant. He said his sister overheard a man speaking to Mr Z.
He says the man told Mr Z he knew where the cop and his girl friend were. And the man told Mr Z he would take care of them.
You need to go get Lissa and leave wherever you guys are staying.
NOW!
Shit! Reynolds sent that text twenty minutes ago. He called him back, "Where is this workplace Mark?"
"I can't tell you. Not even I know. I will try to get it out of him or at least see if I can get in contact with his sister, but now you need to secure yourself and Lissa," Sergeant Mark Reynolds told him.
"I can't be secure if I don't have the tools to be secure. Mark, get me that info. I need to know who this informant's sister is. ASAP," Shane said trying to remain calm.
"Will do," Reynolds said then hung up.
Shane looked at his superior. "Sir, I have to leave but I need back up," he said.
"What's happening?"
"Sarge Reynolds sent me a text that said Mr Z knows where I and Lissa are hiding and he's sending someone down there to kill us. Sir, Lissa is there by herself. We need to go get her."
Supe stood up. He threw his empty bottle in the small office trash can. He took up the landline phone off the receiver. He looked up at him, "Tell Constables Campbell and Walker to get ready."
As Shane rushed through the door he called his dad. He needed someone to secure Lissa until he got there. His dad answered after the fourth ring. David Crosby told him he was already on his way and was calling Lissa but got no response. He told Shane he would see if he could get someone to check on her. Shane then told him that men were heading to their house to hurt her. His dad responded by saying he knew someone who could keep her safe until they got there. Shane thanked his dad and hung up.
He called to Constable Walker who was sitting at her desk, and Constable Campbell who just walked through the front door, motioning to them to follow him. They all entered Superintendent Dacres' office where Shane quickly briefed them on the details Sarge Reynolds gave him.
Supe Dacres received a call on the landline from the Assistant Superintendent of the zone who informed them that he and his team would be more than willing to assist them. Supe Dacres stood up. "Let's go," he said.
Superintendent Dacres retrieved a shotgun, some ammunition and four bullet proof vests from the stock room. He handed each officer a vest, their expressions solemn. He made sure to properly secure himself in one. He nodded reassuringly at his team then led the way through the front door.
They entered a police unit and Supe Dacres announced on dispatch where they were headed, the details of their mission, and that they needed back up. They were notified that three more units could be dispatched and were en route to meet them where Marcus Garvey Drive flows into the North-South Highway. He thanked the dispatcher and signed off.

Lissa lay in the huge bathtub. She had scrubbed it thoroughly earlier, just after she had spoken to her lover. It looked almost good as new. She was proud of the hard work she put in. Now she could enjoy the fruits of her labor.
She managed to get enough hot water to make a salt water bath for herself. It was supposed to help with poor circulation. Her feet looked slightly swollen. There was not much blood on the sanitary pad she discarded. It was probably spotting but she had to be cautious. After sitting in the tub for fifteen minutes, she stood up, bent down and removed the bath plug, and watched as the water swirled down the drain.
She turned on the shower to bathe in cool room temperature water. She lathered the soap in her hands and used her hands to rub on her body. When she touched the curve of her tummy, she realized it was slightly thicker. She rubbed it gently. She closed her eyes and thought of Shane.
She wished he was in the shower with her, caressing her breasts: cupping and gently massaging them, and playing with her nipples. She bit her bottom lip and touched them for herself. They ached a little.
Shane was aware of the discomfort. The last time they made love, he suckled on them the usual way, and she winced a little. He asked if they felt sore and she told him yes. He then proceeded to gently tease them with his fingers until they were hard and perky, then slowly suckled on them.
It was the most intense pleasure she had ever felt besides him penetrating and stroking inside her. It almost felt like she could climax by him doing that alone. She was very hot for him, arching her body up and moaning non-stop. As he began to penetrate her, she couldn't explain how it felt. She felt her body shudder with excitement. She was weak with desire, but Shane's steady hands held her close to him. As he took his time inside her, every stroke felt like an answered prayer.
When he increased his tempo in her, the sensations were so intense she couldn't stop calling his name. She braced her body on his while closing her eyes. She heard him say that she was beautiful, that he loved her. He told her she felt wonderful and no one made him feel like she did. She listened to his breathing and felt his embrace tighten around her. She heard him call her name and say that she was a blessing to him.
As she listened to his words, she found herself being emotional and a few tears fell down her cheeks. It was a good thing he was making love to her from behind. If he had seen her face he would think he was hurting her, but no, instead, it felt like he was healing her broken heart.
It was only after they finished, he realized she was crying. He asked her what was wrong and she told him nothing, that he was perfect. She also told him that she was thankful for the things he said to her and that his lovemaking was like a beautiful song, and she was the instrument he skillfully played. He was flattered by the compliment and squeezed her in his embrace, then reassured her that every word he said was true.
Lissa sighed and touched her belly. All she knew was that she was content with him. She wanted no one else.
She lathered herself up then used the handheld shower head to rinse herself off. She reached for her towel and patted herself dry. She walked naked into the bedroom and lay on the bed. She touched her breasts and wished he was there to quench this need inside her.
She was throbbing down below. She reached her hand down and touched herself. It wasn't enough. She wanted his fingers. They were gentle but the finger tips were a little rough. When he rubbed her the rough skin made the sensations more pleasurable. She moved her hand. No, she wanted him to touch her. She sat up and sighed. She opened her duffle bag, took out some clothes and got dressed.
She was about to prepare dinner when she heard a knock on the door. She went to it and listened. She remembered Shane telling her not to open the door for anyone. She wondered if it was his dad. While the knocking continued, she ran into the bedroom to retrieve her phone. She saw several calls from Shane's dad and from Shane himself. She also saw a text on WhatsApp. She opened the message and read it:
"Baby, pack whatever you can quickly and go with the person I am sending to you. His name is Robert but his friends call him Robbie or Mas Rob. My dad contacted him. You are to ask him this very important question. My dad, David Crosby, loves bun and cheese and stewed peas but there is one other meal he loves. The answer is janga or crayfish. He doesn't know you'll ask this question but he should know the answer. He's a middle aged man with a salt and pepper beard. He should be wearing a green Kangol hat, blue and white shirt, and black pants with black slippers. Go with him."
Lissa heard the banging get more insistent. She grabbed her bag. Went into the bathroom and put her wet panties in a small plastic bag, then stuffed it in a side compartment of her duffle bag. She had clothes on the line, both for her and him. She opened the back door and retrieved them. She stuffed her clothes in her bag and put his clothes in his bag. She pushed her feet in a pair of black flat shoes. Shane's dad loved stewed peas like her? Cool! Something they had in common, she thought, smiling.
She heard a male voice calling her name, "Miss Melissa, mi name Mas Rob, yuh father-in-law ask mi to come for yuh. It's not safe where you are now. You need to come with me." Lissa ran to the door with the bags in her hands. Mas Rob was banging on the door now. "Mas Rob or Robbie?" she answered loudly. "Yes ma'am," Mas Rob replied.
"I will come with you but you have to answer this question for me," Lissa said. Her heart was pounding. She was scared. "My father-in-law loves to eat bun and cheese, and stewed peas, but there's something else he loves to eat besides those two. What is it?"
Mas Rob was perplexed. "Weh him love besides bun and cheese, and stewed peas?" He removed his hat and scratched his head. "And this is important for me to know?" he asked.
"Yes," she answered. She was leaning on the door, listening to him.
"Hmm," Mas Rob said scratching his beard. He thought about his old friend and the many times they hung out together. Quite a few times they would 'run a boat'. He, Davie Crosby, Tom, Patrick and Joseph would bring food to cook on a wood fire. David would always bring ... That's it!
"Him love janga!" Mas Rob answered triumphantly. Lissa was relieved. She opened the door. Mas Rob stood before her smiling. He took the bags from her. Lissa removed the keys from the door, stepped outside and locked it.
She walked briskly behind him, her heart in her throat. Mas Rob's phone started to ring. "Hello," he answered. "Yeah? What are you saying now? You see a black car coming up to Mas Croz road. You sure it's not Delphine's daughter's car? Alright, alright, I will look out for it." Mas Rob ended the call. He looked back at Lissa, walked quickly back to her and grabbed her hand. "Miss yuh going have to walk faster than that," he said.
While he held the two bags in one hand, he pulled her forward to match his pace. He turned down a dirt path, dropping behind some brushes, he motioned for her to do the same. Lissa crouched down grateful she was wearing jeans pants. Mas Rob turned down the volume on his phone to silent. "Put yuh phone on vibrate or silent. Y'ere?" Mas Rob instructed her. Lissa nodded and immediately put her phone on vibrate. She returned it to her pants' pocket and waited.
Suddenly a black car screeched to a halt in front of Shane's house. Three men stepped out. Two of the men approached the house while the other stood by the car looking around his surroundings. All of them were wearing jackets. Lissa thought it was odd that in the early afternoon, while the sun was blazing hot, they wore jackets.
Lissa watched with a dry mouth as the two men walked around the house. One stopped to peer through the front living room window, while the other continued to walk around the house, looking high and low. The man who was playing scout looked over in their direction, but the tall grass and bushes hid Lissa and Mas Rob well. He looked down the road. Mas Rob took off his Kangol hat and stuffed it in his pants' right pocket. "We're going to take a short cut to a hide out spot me and your dad-in-law used to chill," Mas Rob said softly. He tapped her shoulder.
Keeping his body crouched, he moved further into the bushes. Lissa followed him. For a middle aged man he was very strong. He carried the two bags effortlessly, and he was very swift. Lissa tried her best to keep up with him. At points he looked back, and slowed down so she didn't lose sight of him.
After a fifteen minute walk they came to a cleared area, under a huge Lignum Vitae tree. There were blackened stones packed tightly together under it. Lissa figured it was a makeshift cooking area. He placed the bags on a big boulder and motioned for her to sit on another large rock.
He took his phone out of his left pocket and dialed a number. "Weh dem deh now? Dem kick in the door?! Yuh hear gun shot?! But Jeezas!" Mas Rob whispered with a shocked tone. Lissa looked up startled. She was trying to catch her breath. Oh God help us!
Mas Rob hung up then dialed another number. "Davie, this is Robbie. Yes. Mi have di girl. Yuh remember our chill spot nearby Mas Delroy's cow farm? Yeah. We're here waiting. Tell yuh son to hurry up. We saw three men but who knows if more aren't in the community. Alright." Mas Rob ended the call.
He sat beside Lissa on another rock. He patted her hand. "Don't worry, Mas Croz says he is on his way and his son is on his way too. We just have to stay here till they come for you. Okay?" He smiled bravely at her, but she could see he was fearful. Lissa was terrified. Her whole body was shaking.
Oh God please! Please Jesus help us!
I've been wayward but I need your help.
Please!
She prayed in her heart.

Superintendent Dacres floored the gas pedal as he raced to join the other teams. They were to meet up with police units from the Frome Police Station. Shane just got a call from his dad that Mas Rob had Lissa with him. He was relieved and grateful. His dad also told him that Mas Rob was an old bush man and knew his way in and out of every crevice and corner of the Westmoreland hills and plains. He had nothing to worry about. But Shane was still nervous. If something were to happen to Lissa he wouldn't be able to forgive himself.
He couldn't bring himself to contact her family. He hoped he could find her safe and then take her home to them. Mr Z was getting on his last sane nerve. After this he wasn't sure how far he would go.
As they came up on Marcus Garvey Drive, they saw the three other vehicles waiting for them. Inspector Simpson was standing by a vehicle waiting for them. Supe slowed his vehicle down and stopped before him. Simpson stepped forward. "I heard on the dispatch," he said. "I'm coming with you. Lissa is my friend too." He looked at Shane, who nodded and briefly smiled at him.
"Do you know where we're going?" Supe Dacres asked Inspector Simpson. He chuckled. "Actually, I grew up around those parts. Yeah, I know. I'll lead the way," he told them. He smiled and got into the driver's side of the vehicle with Constables Morrant and Sangster in the back. He drove off first, spinning his index finger in the air then pointing forward indicating they should follow him. There were six other officers spread across the two other police units. They all followed him.
The police units, with sirens blaring turned onto the North-South Highway and were allowed to pass freely through each toll station. Shane sent a text instructing Lissa to do what Mas Rob told her and he would be there for her as soon as possible. He loved her.
Within a minute he received a text. She told him she loved him and she was scared. She told him to hurry and come get her. Shane squeezed his eyes shut. He tried to control his breathing. He opened his eyes and texted her back: "I'm coming baby. I'm on my way. Be brave for me."
He exited the message window and locked the phone screen. Placing the phone in his pants' pocket and sighed deeply. Constable Walker saw his body language but said nothing. Constable Campbell was in the front passenger seat. She was checking her weapon.
Shane bowed his head, closed his eyes and prayed in his heart:
My God and Heavenly Father.
My Savior and King.
Strong and mighty warrior,
Fearless in battle,
My shield and sword,
My defender and strength
I pray your covering over the woman I love
We have been wayward
We have been disobedient
Lord Almighty I pray for your forgiveness
Forgive us Lord
Look on your servant
I have been weak
I have gone astray, but now I offer my body to you to use for your glory
Protect me and the officers that are with me,
Shield us from flying bullets, Protect us from evil men
Let none of us be hurt today
Build a wall of protection around us
Father protect Lissa, Cover her Father
She is dear to me
I pray that you protect her and Mas Rob who is with her
Let no harm come to them
Hide them under your protection
May victory be ours today.
Help me to be bold
I pray in the mighty name of Jesus,
Amen!

David Crosby knew a shortcut to get directly to where his old friend and Lissa were hiding. It would require him trespassing on private property but he would pay any expense afterwards.
The young woman was carrying his son's child or children. It was worth taking the risk. His son was about an hour away. He had to do something. He parked his vehicle on the outskirts of a canefield. He brought his licensed firearm with him. His wife didn't like him having it but he saw the necessary balance between love and judgement. He stepped out of his vehicle, locked the door, and armed his vehicle.
His gun was still on safety while he had it in his hand, and moved through the canefield carefully. He tried his best not to damage the blades too much as he moved through them. He had put his phone on vibrate and told his wife he had a meeting with his fellow elders. He never lied to her, but this time he had to. She knew nothing of what was happening, and it would be best she knew as little as possible, for the sake of her health.
He walked for ten minutes and was coming up to the clearing that led to a section of the old cow grazing pass, when he saw two men walking stealthily, coming from the West, going in the direction where Lissa and Mas Rob would be.
He stopped and stooped down as one of them, the shorter, older man, looked around him. When the man looked back in the direction they were going and moved off, David stood up and began following them. He took out his phone and texted his son, telling him that two men were on the trail to where Mas Rob and Lissa were hiding. He told him to get his butt here fast.
Shane texted back that his team had joined forces with officers from the Frome Police Station and they were twenty minutes away. David put away his phone. That was still too far away. He moved further into the bushes following the men. After he passed the last of the field, he crouched lower and watched as the backs of them drifted further away from him. He wouldn't panic, he knew where they were going.
****
Mas Rob stood up. He sniffed the air. He smelt unfamiliar odours coming closer. He took up the bags he was carrying and looked at Lissa. "Let's go over here," he said to Lissa. "Someone is coming." Lissa's eyes were large with fear. Mas Rob motioned his head towards the way he was going and moved quickly. Lissa got up and followed him.
They were covered over in the bush. She was on her hand and knees while Mas Rob lay flat on his chest. His head was cocked to one side as he listened. After a minute passed, two men came out from behind the Lignum Vitae tree and perused the area where she and Mas Rob were just sitting. Lissa dropped to her belly. The men heard the rustling sound and looked around. Lissa lay still.
One of the men came close to where they were and stood looking over them. Luckily, the area was so thick with waist high grass, he couldn't see anything and was reluctant to step in. He moved back to where his partner was, and motioned for them to go in the opposite direction.
Mas Rob waited for five minutes more and was about to get up when he smelt another unfamiliar scent. He crouched down again. He waited and was overjoyed to see his old friend coming through the enclosure. He stood up. David swiftly turned and was relieved to see his friend. He lowered his gun. Mas Rob went to him and grinned. "Glad to see you old friend," he said.
Lissa stood up and came forward. She had dried leaves and grass in her hair. She was sure she looked horrible. David slapped Robbie on the shoulder. "Thank you for taking care of my daughter-in-law," he said. Robbie smiled broadly. "The duty of a friend is never done," Robbie replied.
"How do we get out of here?" Lissa asked nervously.
"This way," David said. He moved back into the thick bush behind the Lignum Vitae tree and they followed him. Mas Rob carried one bag in each hand.
"Is Shane on his way?" she asked.
David looked back at Lissa. He saw her fear. He nodded. "Yes, he and quite a few officers are on their way. In the meantime time let's move quickly. He picked up the pace and moved forward. Lissa was scared and tired, but did her best to follow close behind him. Mas Rob deliberately put himself at the back to secure the rear. As he walked, he sniffed the air, and scanned the bushes around them.
They were coming up on the canefield when David's phone vibrated. He answered. It was Shane. He told him where they were and turned on his phone's location. Shane told him he got it. David ended the call. Shane called Inspector Simpson and told him where they were headed. Inspector texted the Assistant Superintendent the details to relay to his team.
Meanwhile they were making their way through the rows of sugarcane, when Mas Rob picked up on a scent. He whispered sharply, "Someone's coming! Someone is coming!" David grabbed Lissa's hand and started running. With the bags still in his hands Mas Rob ran as well. They rushed through sugar cane blades. Lissa felt one scratch her arm. She grimaced in pain but kept on moving.
They were nearing the exit when they heard gun shots firing. The shots hit the sugarcane a few feet away, splintering the plants. Lissa screamed. "Run!" She heard Mas Rob say. She looked around to see a man gaining ground on Mas Rob. Mas Rob threw one bag then the other at him, then tackled the man to the ground. David pulled her harder.
They jumped out to the other side, exiting the field. They ran to the car. David unlocked the car, jumped in and opened the door for her. Lissa slipped inside, and felt pelvic cramps as she closed the car door.
As the cramps got more intense, Lissa bent over trying to cope with the pain. David started the car and put it in reverse just as the other man exited the field and ran towards them. David pressed the gas and moved the car while in reverse. They heard police sirens coming closer.
Lissa started to cry. She was in pain but was also overjoyed that she would get to see Shane again. As the siren sounds got louder, the man fired at them. Both Lissa and David ducked. The man ran back into the canefield. She heard a single gun shot. Lissa flinched. Her heart was frozen. She dreaded that Mas Rob was dead.
A police car drove swiftly passed them. Then another, and another, until six police units stopped in front of the field. Several police officers exited their vehicles and moved cautiously into the canefield. David Crosby stopped his car and shut off the engine. In the penultimate vehicle, Lissa saw Shane step out. He was walking towards the canefield.
Lissa opened the door and stepped outside. She filled her lungs with air and screamed his name. He turned around, saw her and ran to her. He grabbed her up in his arms and squeezed her close to him. She grimaced in pain. He felt her flinch. He put her away from him and looked at her face.
"Lissa, what's wrong?" He looked at her. There were no wounds, only a tiny scratch on her arm. He touched her face. "Baby, talk to me?" he asked, his eyes fearful. David stepped out of his vehicle and looked at Lissa concerned.
Lissa's throat was dry. She felt dizzy. "The baby," she responded. She grabbed onto his arm as a wave of dizziness hit her "The baby!" she began to say frantically. She felt a rush of blood flow out of her. "Shane, the baby! I'm bleeding!" She was about the fall when Shane caught her and lifted her in his arms.
She looked at him. He appeared foggy, unclear. Everything was pale-white around him. She closed her eyes and was unconscious. Shane placed Lissa in his father's car as he heard gun shots in the distance. He looked at his dad. "Go," David said. "I'll take her to the Sav-la-mar Hospital." David entered his car, put it in gear and drove off.
Shane's eyes followed their retreat for a minute then he ran towards the gunshots, his firearms ready. He had one strapped to his belt and the other in his shoulder holster. Though he was wearing a bullet proof vest, he still felt nervous. He whispered a quick prayer then entered the canefield.
